Mercury Business Bank Review

Mercury Business Banking Review (2026): Fees, Pros & Cons

Mercury Base Plan

Mercury combines business checking and savings with payments, team debit cards, invoicing and accounting connections. This review examines the $0 monthly plan and identifies paid features and separate investment, charge-card and lending products.

Mercury Banking Quick Verdict

Who Is Mercury Base Best For? Eligible businesses that want to handle customer invoicing, supplier payments, employee debit cards and accounting connections through one account. Its practical appeal is the combination of everyday payment functions and team tools on the base plan.

Check Your Business Needs: Start with your funding routes, payment currencies and invoicing workflow. Those choices determine the timing conditions, transaction charges and paid features that matter to your business. Check eligibility before applying and assess investment or lending products separately.

Average of 5 Feature Scores: 9.5/10

  • Domestic Transfer Costs — 9.5/10: Ordinary dashboard ACH, outgoing domestic wires and incoming domestic wires.
  • Team Access and Included Cards — 9.5/10: Configurable team permissions and included debit cards.
  • Invoicing and Accounting Connections — 9.5/10: Included invoicing, automatic QuickBooks Online/Xero connections and the included NetSuite bank feed.
  • Outgoing USD International Wire Fee — 9.5/10: Mercury’s standard $0 SHA provider-fee route. Intermediary fees can reduce the amount received.
  • Expedited ACH Fee — 9.5/10: Automatic same-day ACH at $0 when the payment meets the timing and amount requirements.

Mercury Base Business Banking: Pros and Cons

Pros

  • No Monthly Maintenance or Overdraft Fees: Mercury’s Base plan has no monthly subscription fee, minimum balance requirement or overdraft fee. This helps businesses maintain separate checking and savings accounts without recurring account charges, although optional subscriptions and certain services have additional costs.
  • Free Domestic ACH and Wire Transfers: Ordinary dashboard ACH payments and domestic wires are free to send and receive. Eligible ACH payments can also receive same-day processing without an additional Mercury fee, helping businesses manage frequent supplier payments while accounting for submission cutoffs and transfer limits.
  • Free Standard International USD Wires: Mercury does not charge a provider fee for standard international wires sent in U.S. dollars. Businesses paying overseas suppliers in USD can avoid Mercury’s outgoing wire charge, although intermediary deductions may reduce the amount received.
  • Integrated Invoicing and Accounting Connections: The Base plan includes invoice creation, payment tracking, Bill Pay and connections to QuickBooks Online, Xero and NetSuite. These tools can help businesses coordinate receivables, supplier payments and financial records without purchasing a paid Mercury subscription.
  • Team Access, Debit Cards and Spending Controls: Included physical and virtual debit cards, configurable team permissions and spending controls help owners delegate purchases and banking tasks. Separating employee, accountant and administrator access can reduce the need to give every team member full account permissions.

Cons

  • Cash Deposits Are Not Supported: Mercury does not accept cash deposits through branches or ATMs. Businesses receiving physical cash need another institution or deposit arrangement before transferring funds into Mercury, adding an operational step to cash management.
  • Checking and Savings Have a Published 0.00% APY: Mercury’s published business deposit-account terms list a 0.00% APY. Businesses holding substantial reserves should evaluate separate interest-bearing alternatives or Mercury Treasury, an investment product that can lose value and is not FDIC-insured.
  • Foreign-Currency Payments Carry Conversion Costs: International wires requiring currency conversion incur a published 1% exchange fee, while optional premium USD international wires carry a $15 Mercury charge. Businesses paying overseas suppliers should compare the required currency, transfer route and potential intermediary deductions rather than assuming all international payments are free.
  • Advanced Invoicing and Accounting Require Paid Plans: Recurring invoices, invoice collection by ACH debit and enhanced NetSuite automation are not included in the Base plan. Businesses needing these workflows should evaluate Plus or Pro subscription costs alongside any applicable transaction charges.
  • Eligibility and Payment Features Have Restrictions: Mercury does not currently support sole proprietorships, and applicants must meet business-formation and verification requirements. Real-time payments also depend on the account’s partner bank, so businesses should confirm eligibility and available payment methods before relying on the account.

FinanceProspector Feature Scores

The average uses the five feature scores shown in Quick Verdict, with equal weight for each. It excludes unscored features and is not an overall account rating. The calculation is (9.5 + 9.5 + 9.5 + 9.5 + 9.5) ÷ 5 = 9.5.

These scores measure only the named feature comparisons, not customer-service quality, investment returns or every aspect of the account. The display scale runs from 7.5 to 9.5. Read FinanceProspector Editorial Methodology.

Mercury Illustrative Payment-Cost Examples

Ordinary Dashboard Payments

Payment mix can matter more than transaction count alone. These hypothetical monthly examples apply Mercury’s documented fees to ordinary dashboard payments on the $0 base plan. They are calculations, not observed customer results.

Ordinary Dashboard Payments
Hypothetical Monthly ActivityCalculationIncluded Mercury Charges
20 ordinary dashboard ACH payments and two outgoing domestic wires$0 subscription + 20 × $0 + 2 × $0$0
The same domestic activity plus three standard USD international wires$0 + 3 × $0$0
The same domestic activity plus three USD international wires using the optional $15 route$0 + 3 × $15$45
The same domestic activity plus a $10,000 non-USD international wire$0 + $10,000 × 1%$100
The same domestic activity plus a $50,000 non-USD international wire$0 + $50,000 × 1%$500

FinanceProspector’s Take: Increasing ordinary dashboard ACH or domestic-wire volume does not add a Mercury charge under the listed fee schedule. Changing the currency or selecting the optional international-wire route changes the calculation. For an overseas supplier, establish the required currency and payment route before treating a $0 wire fee as the full payment cost.

These totals include only the listed Mercury subscription and transfer charges. They exclude other institutions’ charges, intermediary deductions, paid subscriptions or add-ons, card processing, API mass payments and other transactions. They do not guarantee delivery, approval, available limits or the amount the supplier receives. Mercury invites companies exchanging more than $200,000 to discuss fees, so do not extrapolate the 1% examples to a negotiated quote.

Comparing Plus and Pro for Invoice Collection

If you need invoice collection by ACH debit, compare the subscription and collection charge together. Using Mercury’s displayed annual-plan monthly equivalents, this narrow model is:

  • Plus: $29.90 + $1 × the number of payer-initiated ACH-debit entries.
  • Pro: $299 + $0 × the number of those entries.
Comparing Plus and Pro for Invoice Collection
Payer-Initiated ACH-Debit Entries in a MonthPlus: Monthly-Equivalent Subscription and Entry ChargesPro: Monthly-Equivalent Subscription and Entry Charges
30$59.90$299
100$129.90$299
269$298.90$299
270$299.90$299
500$529.90$299

FinanceProspector’s Take: The difference between the displayed subscription equivalents is $299 − $29.90 = $269.10. In this model, Pro first costs less at 270 payer-initiated entries per month, when Plus reaches $299.90. That is a calculation for the two included cost components, not a universal upgrade threshold: Pro’s other functions, annual-plan commitment, your usage pattern and excluded costs also matter.

Count entries initiated by payers, not just successful collections. The recorded fee provision charges Plus for each initiated entry whether or not the payment succeeds. The figures use annual-plan monthly equivalents; they do not describe month-to-month subscription pricing or the timing of subscription billing. Other transactions, processing charges, add-ons and any applicable taxes are excluded. The base plan is not a comparable option for this particular collection feature because invoice collection by ACH debit requires a paid plan.

Mercury Funding, Transfers and Access to Money

Plan the funding step before the outgoing payment. Money being transferred into Mercury or reviewed for check deposit may not yet be available to pay a supplier; an outgoing cutoff does not accelerate that funding process.

ACH and Domestic Wires

Outgoing ACH is sent same-day when submitted before 12pm Pacific and for less than $1,000,000. Otherwise, Mercury describes next-day processing. For example, an eligible $5,000 payment submitted at 11:30am Pacific on a business day meets those route conditions; submitting it at 12:30pm misses the cutoff. Neither example guarantees when the receiving bank makes the funds available.

Transfers from a Plaid-linked account into Mercury take three business days under the published processing guidance. Transfers from Mercury to a Plaid-linked account take zero to one business day.

The outgoing domestic-wire cutoff is 1:30pm Pacific. Confirm the available delivery route and account limits before relying on a deadline.

International and Real-Time Payments

Mercury documents international wires in more than 40 currencies. For USD payments, the standard SHA route can leave intermediary charges with the recipient; the optional OUR route is intended to make full-value receipt more likely without guaranteeing it. Establish the supplier’s required currency and receipt amount before choosing the route; the fee examples above model the sender’s listed charges.

Companies formed outside the United States cannot use Mercury’s international wire features.

Real-time payments are available only through Column N.A. accounts. Choice Financial Group accounts cannot use them. A $0 Mercury charge does not establish that the other institution charges nothing or that every payment arrives instantly.

FinanceProspector’s Take: The listed $0 real-time-payment fee is a price, not a statement that every Mercury account supports the same payment route. The recorded availability is limited to Column N.A. accounts; Choice Financial Group accounts cannot use that route. Check the partner bank identified in your dashboard before including real-time payments in your business’s payment workflow.

Remote Check Deposits

Mercury supports remote check deposits. Initial limits depend on business verification and transaction history. It does not accept eChecks.

Checks are manually reviewed. Once approved, a check can take up to five business days to post. Submission after the 12pm Pacific cutoff may result in funds settling on the sixth business day. Review and approval occur separately from posting, so this is not an unconditional five-business-day maximum from submission.

Mailed Checks and Bill Pay

Mercury can print and mail a check on a customer’s behalf at a $0 provider fee. A mailed check remains pending until deposited and cancels automatically if not deposited within 90 days.

The Choice agreement requires the deposit account to have been open for at least 30 days, limits delivery to addresses in the 50 U.S. states, and deducts the payment amount when it is authorized. It also excludes certain government, court-directed and other specified payments from that check service. Those are Choice-specific provisions.

Bill Pay is included and supports unlimited bill processing from checking and savings. The selected payment method retains its own fees, limits and conditions.

Cash and ATM Access

Businesses collecting physical cash need a supported deposit arrangement outside Mercury before relying on the account for their full collection workflow.

The physical business debit card can be used at ATMs; virtual debit cards and IO cards cannot. Mercury charges no fee of its own at U.S. ATMs, though the operator may charge. Published limits are up to $1,000 per card per business day and $3,000 per day across cardholders. Review your account’s applicable spending limits.

The Choice card agreement provides for a foreign transaction fee on ATM withdrawals outside the United States.

Mercury Team Access and Debit Cards

Mercury allows any number of team members to be invited. Its current role descriptions include:

Mercury Team Access and Debit Cards
RoleDocumented Access
TeammateAssigned cards and reimbursements only
AdminFull access
AccountantAccount and transaction visibility and bookkeeping functions; permissions can be adjusted
CustomConfigurable permissions

For example, an employee who only needs an assigned card has a different access requirement from an accountant managing records or an administrator controlling the account. Use the documented role options to separate those responsibilities rather than granting everyone full access.

Physical and virtual debit cards are included. After account approval, virtual cards can be created and used immediately. These are debit-card features; IO is a separately eligible charge card.

Mercury Invoicing, Accounting and Paid Plans

The base plan includes creating, sending and tracking any number of invoices and receiving payment. Card payments use Stripe, whose processing charges are separate.

Recurring invoices and receiving invoice payments by ACH debit require a paid plan.

Mercury connects to QuickBooks Online, Xero and NetSuite. It documents automatic transaction sync with QuickBooks Online and Xero and an included NetSuite bank feed. Enhanced NetSuite automation requires a paid plan. CSV downloads are also available.

A bank feed or accounting connection does not establish that every accounting task is automated. The functions supported depend on the connection and plan.

The subscription decision depends on your collection workflow. Creating a one-time invoice is different from automating recurring invoices or collecting through ACH debit. Do not treat the ordinary outgoing ACH fee as the price of the separate invoice-collection feature.

Mercury Additional Products and Services

Savings and Mercury Treasury

A business savings account is available alongside checking. The partner-bank savings agreements publish a 0.001% interest rate with a 0.00% APY. Column also publishes a 0.00% checking APY; the Choice deposit account is non-interest-bearing.

Mercury Treasury is a separate investment product, offered by Mercury Advisory, LLC, subject to eligibility. Treasury yield is subject to investment risk and is not a checking or savings APY.

Treasury holdings are not FDIC-insured deposits. Investments can lose value. Evaluate the product’s terms separately from deposit-account features.

The shared interface does not make every balance the same type of asset. Identify the product holding your money before comparing returns, access or protections.

Illustrative Mercury Treasury investment interface
This supplied Mercury Treasury example shows an investment balance, portfolio allocation and yield. Treasury is a separate investment product; the pictured yield is not a current rate or checking/savings APY. View Mercury Treasury

IO, Working Capital and Venture Debt

IO is a separate charge card issued by Patriot Bank, N.A. Its published 1.5% cashback and repayment terms belong to that card, not the business debit card or deposit account.

FinanceProspector’s Take: Savings APY, Treasury yield and IO cashback describe three different products. The recorded savings APY is 0.00%; Treasury is an investment product with investment risk and no FDIC deposit insurance; IO’s published 1.5% cashback is a separate charge-card benefit. Compare each figure with the eligibility, access and protections of its own product rather than treating them as interchangeable returns on your checking balance.

Working Capital and Venture Debt are separate loan products subject to eligibility and credit criteria. Mercury identifies Mercury Lending, LLC as the originator and Mercury Servicing, LLC as the servicer. The disclosures state that these loans are not offered to businesses operating in California.

Using Mercury Public Website

Mercury’s published pricing information separates the base plan, Plus, Pro and additional products. Use it to identify the subscription setting and functions you need; annual-plan monthly equivalents are different from month-to-month pricing.

The Help Center provides the eligibility, application-document and payment-processing guidance discussed in this review. Partner-bank agreements explain bank-specific account, card and savings terms. The final Sources section groups these references so you can find the product information and the agreement that applies to your account.

The six interface images in this review are supplied illustrations. They do not establish how an approved account will perform, which limits it will receive or which additional products it will qualify for. Visit Mercury Website

Mercury Eligibility and Application Requirements

Mercury requires a company formed and registered in the United States or a U.S. territory, with existing or planned U.S. operations. Its principal place of business can have a U.S. or international address. Registered-agent addresses, P.O. boxes and UPS boxes are not accepted.

Sole proprietorships are not currently supported. Single-member and multi-member LLCs can apply, subject to eligibility and application requirements. Being a person who works alone does not change the legal form of the business.

Mercury excludes certain businesses, including money services businesses, adult-entertainment businesses, cannabis businesses, internet-gambling businesses and trusts. Geographic restrictions apply to founders or financial controllers living in listed countries and regions. Beneficial owners and team members must be at least 18.

Documents to Prepare

  • State-filed formation evidence: for example, Articles of Organization, Articles of Incorporation or a Certificate of Formation confirming registration.
  • IRS-issued EIN evidence: Form CP575, Form 147c or the SS-4 returned by the IRS. An unreturned SS-4 application is not the same document. Mercury also accepts an IRS website EIN-confirmation screenshot when a completed document is not yet available.
  • Identification: for owners with at least 25% ownership and at least one person with operating control.
  • Appropriate government ID: U.S. citizens may provide a driver’s license, state ID, passport or passport card; permanent residents or non-citizens may provide a permanent residency card or employment authorization card; international applicants may provide a passport.

Identification should show the photo, date of birth, issue and expiration dates and identification number. Mercury says it can sometimes verify details automatically, so some applicants may not need to upload documents.

Application and Review

Prepare the application using the documented eligibility and evidence requirements:

  1. Confirm your business structure, location and activities meet Mercury’s requirements.
  2. Prepare formation, EIN, address and ownership information.
  3. Complete the application through Mercury’s official site.
  4. Watch for requests for additional documents or clarification.
  5. Before planning transactions, confirm the account’s partner bank, available payment methods and limits.

Mercury advertises completing the application in 10 minutes or less. Separately, its Help Center says decisions usually arrive within zero to two business days. Those are different stages; additional information may be required, and neither statement guarantees approval. Visit Mercury

Mercury Support Channels and Contact Options

Customers can message support from the dashboard. The Help Center describes this route as available 24/7, with a typical response within five minutes. This is a published typical-response statement, not a guarantee.

Support can also be reached at help@mercury.com.

A relationship manager is a Pro-plan feature.

Mercury Account Security and Controls

Mercury describes two-factor authentication using time-based one-time passwords and says it does not send authentication codes by SMS. It also states that it is SOC 2-compliant.

These are published provider controls and statements, not results of independent security testing by FinanceProspector.

The Choice commercial debit-card agreement distinguishes business cards from consumer cards: consumer protections under the Electronic Funds Transfer Act and Regulation E for lost or stolen cards and unauthorized transactions do not apply under that agreement. It gives customers 60 days from a transaction’s appearance in the transaction history to report an unauthorized or erroneous transaction. Review the terms applicable to your account and report concerns promptly.

Mercury Legal Disclosures and Deposit Protection

Mercury is a financial technology company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services are provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC.

Mercury states that eligible checking and savings deposits can receive up to $5 million in FDIC insurance through partner banks and their sweep networks, distributing deposits across up to 20 banks. Applicable pass-through and sweep conditions must be satisfied. Deposit insurance covers the failure of an insured bank. Coverage depends on the underlying insured banks and account arrangements; it is not insurance of Mercury itself or protection against investment losses.

The partner-bank agreements have different dispute-resolution provisions. Choice provides a 30-day written right to reject its arbitration provision. Column provides a 30-day opt-out of its class-action waiver; that is not an opt-out of arbitration. Both agreements contain small-claims provisions with their own terms. Read the agreement applicable to your account.

Under the Choice deposit agreement, a customer’s written termination notice is honored within three business days plus settlement time. The agreement also provides for bank-initiated closure and instructions for the remaining balance. These are Choice-specific terms.

Treasury, charge cards and lending products have separate agreements and protections.
