Bluevine vs. Novo Business Banking: Fees, Interest, Payments and Account Fit

How does money move through your business? If you deposit cash and want to earn interest on operating funds, Bluevine Standard offers cash-deposit routes and checking interest when you meet its activity requirements. If your priority is organizing transactions and setting money aside within one account, Novo combines included bookkeeping with budgeting Reserves. Eligible automatic Stripe payouts may also qualify for earlier access through Novo Boost.

Both accounts have no monthly maintenance fee or minimum balance requirement. The useful comparison is what your normal activity requires—and what you would pay for cash deposits, faster transfers or connected services. This article compares Bluevine Standard with Novo Business Checking; Bluevine’s paid plans, investments and financing are separate products.

FinanceProspector Feature Scores

These are the individual feature scores from each provider’s review. Features are shown side by side only where their scoring criteria and assumptions match; the remaining scores are grouped by provider. A feature’s absence from a provider’s scored list does not mean it is unavailable. Business Banking feature scores use a display scale of 7.5–9.5, with 9.5 the highest possible score under this framework. No overall comparison score is calculated.

Advantages and Limitations

Bluevine Standard

Bluevine provides supported cash-deposit routes, separately numbered sub-accounts and role-specific access. Standard can earn checking interest when the published activity requirements are met.

Interest depends on qualification, not just the balance. Cash deposits and faster payments carry charges. Separate accounting services, Treasury and credit products should not be treated as included Standard checking benefits.

Novo

Novo includes bookkeeping and invoicing without a monthly maintenance charge. Reserves support internal budgeting, and qualifying automatic Stripe payouts can receive earlier access through Boost.

Reserves are not separate accounts, and additional users receive full account access with specified owner-only exceptions. Novo does not accept direct cash deposits. Faster ACH has a fee, outgoing native-wire access is conditional and ATM reimbursement is capped.

Fees and Minimum Balances

Fees and Minimum Balances

Standard ACH$0 provider charge$0 provider charge
Faster ACH$101.5%; $0.50 minimum; $20 maximum
Outgoing Domestic Wire$15Quoted for eligible customers; fee schedule lists up to $45

Printed-and-Mailed Check$1.50 each$0; limits apply
ATM Withdrawal$0 Bluevine fee at MoneyPass; $2.50 out of network plus operator feesNo Novo fee; third-party reimbursement up to $7 per customer per month

Neither requires a balance to waive its base monthly maintenance charge. Bluevine's interest conditions are separate from account maintenance. Novo describes a $1,000 initial deposit as recommended, not required.

Bluevine's dormancy terms permit a one-time aggregate fee up to $10 under the stated inactivity conditions, limited to the remaining combined balance if below $10. Novo's agreement allows an inactivity fee after 18 months without a customer-initiated transaction; the cited fee schedule does not specify its amount. A $0 monthly maintenance charge does not eliminate every possible fee.

Connected software and payment processing can add charges. Confirm the price and available payment method in your account before authorizing a transaction.

Interest, Yield and Cash Management

Checking Interest and Qualification

Bluevine Standard lists 1.3% APY on eligible combined main-account and sub-account balances up to $250,000. During each eligibility period, meet at least one requirement:

  • Spend $500 on qualifying Business Debit Mastercard and/or Business Cashback Mastercard purchases, excluding ATM transactions.
  • Receive $2,500 in qualifying client payments through ACH, wires, mobile check deposits or merchant-processing transfers.

Activity must post and settle from 3 a.m. Eastern on the preceding month's last business day through 3 a.m. Eastern on the current month's last business day. Cash deposits, transfers from your own accounts and checks drawn on your own accounts do not qualify as client payments. Missing both activity routes means 0.00% APY for that month. Rates and conditions can change.

Novo checking pays 0% APY. Reserves do not create a separate interest-bearing savings product.

Separate Treasury Investments

Bluevine Treasury is a separate investment service. Standard customers need $50,000 across checking and sub-accounts for access under its published terms; that is an access threshold, not a $50,000 minimum investment. Treasury investments are not FDIC insured, are not bank guaranteed and may lose value. Investment yield is not the same as Standard checking APY.

Cash Deposits, Checks and ATM Access

Cash Deposits

Bluevine supports cash deposits at participating Green Dot locations and deposit-capable Allpoint+ ATMs. Its agreement lists $4.95 per Green Dot deposit, while help guidance says up to $4.95. Confirm the transaction charge rather than treating the descriptions as identical. Allpoint+ deposits cost $1 plus 0.5% of the amount under the published fee schedule. Location availability and limits apply; a withdrawal ATM does not necessarily accept deposits.

Novo does not accept direct cash deposits. Its help guidance describes buying an eligible money order and using mobile check deposit as an indirect route. Purchase costs, mobile-deposit eligibility, acceptance and holds still apply. It is not equivalent to branch or ATM cash deposit.

Check Deposits

Both support mobile check deposits subject to approval, limits and holds. Confirm access before accepting a check on the assumption it will be immediately spendable.

ATM Withdrawals

Bluevine lists MoneyPass withdrawals without a Bluevine fee; out-of-network transactions can incur $2.50 plus operator charges. Novo charges no withdrawal fee of its own and reimburses operator fees up to $7 per customer per month. Neither promises that every withdrawal is free.

Mailed Checks and Checkbooks

Bluevine documents customer-written checkbooks as well as mailed checks, subject to its funding and owner-signature conditions. Novo can mail checks from the app but does not supply customer checkbooks. Its delivery estimate is seven to ten business days, not guaranteed receipt.

ACH, Wires and Other Payments

Standard and Faster ACH

Standard outgoing ACH has no provider charge on either account. Faster service is a separate route: Bluevine lists $10 for same-day ACH; Novo Express ACH is percentage-based with a minimum and cap.

Novo describes same-business-day Express processing for eligible instructions before 2:30 p.m. Eastern, subject to holidays, limits and recipient processing. Its standard ACH descriptions vary between published pages, so use the expected arrival shown for the actual instruction. Do not assume both providers' faster routes promise identical delivery.

Domestic Wires and Bill Payments

Bluevine Standard lists outgoing domestic wires at $15. Novo's dedicated help guidance restricts native outgoing wires to selected eligible customers; the fee schedule lists up to $45. Confirm that the option is enabled and check the quote. Novo also documents a 72-hour restriction after a new-device login or an account-detail change.

Both offer bill-payment functions. The selected payment method retains its own pricing and restrictions. Payment limits are account-specific; confirm available funds, cutoffs and approval requirements before scheduling payroll or supplier payments.

International Payments and FX

Bluevine Standard lists $25 for an outgoing international payment in USD and $25 plus 1.5% for a foreign-currency payment, subject to supported routes and eligibility. These are listed provider charges, not a guarantee of the amount received.

Novo provides a Wise connection for international transfers. Wise has its own fees, rates, limits and restrictions. Compare the quote for the actual currency, destination and payment amount rather than inferring a universal cost from the connection.

International card purchases and ATM withdrawals are different from wires. Novo states it imposes no foreign debit-card purchase or ATM fee of its own, but Mastercard conversion and merchant/operator charges can apply. Check each account's applicable card terms separately from its international-transfer prices.

Account Structure and Business Tools

Bluevine Standard permits up to five sub-accounts. Each has a distinct account number while sharing the routing number, so a business can examine separate payment destinations as well as internal budgeting.

Novo supports up to 20 Reserves within one checking account. Automatic allocations can help label funds for taxes or planned expenses, but Reserves are not separately numbered bank accounts. Reserve activity does not appear on monthly statements in the published guidance.

The practical distinction is whether a workflow needs an account number or an allocation label. Neither establishes a separate legal entity or automatically creates another deposit-insurance limit.

Invoicing, Bookkeeping and Integrations

Invoice Creation and Payment Acceptance

Both include invoice creation. Bluevine Standard lists unlimited invoices and payment links, estimates, one automatic reminder per invoice and recurring invoices with autopay enabled. Custom invoice fields are excluded from Standard in the plan comparison.

Novo includes recurring invoices and reminders, with ACH, PayPal and card-payment connections through Stripe or Square. Creating an invoice and processing the customer's payment are separate functions; processor charges and eligibility still apply.

Bookkeeping and Record Retention

Novo Bookkeeping includes categorization, rules, linked-account transactions and financial reports. Novo's guidance allows up to five linked accounts total, including Novo. It says the feature cannot be turned off once activated and its bookkeeping data is not retained after closure. Save required reports and records before closing the account.

Bluevine's documented QuickBooks guidance does not support sub-account payment sync. Novo says changes made in accounting software do not appear back in Novo. A connection is not unrestricted two-way automation; a missing entry here is an evidence gap, not proof of unavailability.

Bluevine Accounting is a separate service with a published ongoing price of $12 per month. Temporary trials and promotional software offers are excluded from this comparison.

Mobile and Digital Banking

Bluevine provides iOS and Android access on compatible devices, with account, card and payment functions described in its published guidance. Some accounting setup uses the desktop or mobile web dashboard rather than an identical in-app workflow.

Novo's app supports payment tasks, check-deposit submission and card management subject to account access and limits. Physical and virtual cards can be frozen or unfrozen through the app or web dashboard, and documented wallet support includes Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.

These are published capabilities rather than findings from hands-on app testing.

CardsPhysical/virtual team cards under issuance and spending rulesOne physical and one virtual debit card per user

Bluevine's card guide permits up to 50 active physical and virtual cards across the business, not per sub-account, with cardholder and profile conditions. Novo's card spending controls do not make an additional user's banking access read-only.

Authentication and Account Controls

Bluevine documents authentication by text or app notification for specified actions and untrusted devices, configurable alerts and card lock. Standard includes ACH and check debit blocks; paid-plan ACH preauthorization and positive pay should not be assigned to it.

Novo describes one-time-password and device-authentication controls with optional notifications. Review the reporting requirements for your account.

Customer Support

Bluevine lists phone agents Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern, excluding Federal Reserve Bank holidays, plus an account-support email and signed-in live chat during business hours. Its AI assistant is described as available 24/7. Automated card reporting and AI availability are different from round-the-clock human support. Premier's priority phone queue is not a Standard benefit.

Novo provides in-app/dashboard messaging and a support email route. Confirm general applicant phone support and staffed hours directly with Novo. A fraud-specific contact is not a general service line.

Compare the support route for the task you need.

Credit, Lending and Additional Services

Separate Credit and Financing Products

Bluevine's separate Line of Credit is issued by Celtic Bank and serviced by Bluevine, subject to credit approval. Partner financing has separate requirements. Checking approval does not imply borrowing approval.

Novo lists separate Continental Bank credit-card and business-loan products, alongside a Merchant Cash Advance from Novo Funding LLC.

Novo Boost and Earlier Stripe Payouts

Novo Boost can make qualifying automatic Stripe payouts available up to two business days early without an additional Boost charge. Enrollment conditions include good standing and at least $50 deposited before enrollment. Manual Stripe payouts do not qualify for the timing offer.

The applicable early-access limit is account-specific and can change; the public $5,000 description is not a guaranteed allowance. Credit is provisional and can be reversed, including when the underlying payout fails or does not arrive within five business days. A reversal can leave an insufficient balance. Earlier access is not interest or a measured increase in business revenue.

Deposit Protection and Account Terms

Bluevine and Novo are fintech companies, not FDIC-insured banks. Bluevine identifies Coastal Community Bank; Novo identifies Middlesex Federal Savings, F.A., with separate network-placement arrangements.

Bluevine advertises potential coverage up to $3 million through Coastal and program banks, subject to sweep and pass-through conditions. Placement can take up to three business days under its sweep disclosure. Opting out removes extended sweep coverage.

Novo's existing insurance help describes a Cambr arrangement and potential coverage up to $5 million, while a separately published agreement uses the StoneCastle name. Confirm the program and banks actually applicable to the account. Do not assume every balance receives the advertised maximum.

The standard FDIC framework is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Other deposits in the same category at the same bank count toward that limit. Records, placement and pass-through conditions matter; sub-accounts and Reserves do not automatically multiply coverage.

FDIC insurance concerns insured-bank failure, not every fintech disruption, uninterrupted account access or investment losses. Treasury is a separate investment product. Applicable agreements also govern holds, restrictions, closure and dispute processes.

Eligibility and Account Opening

Bluevine requires an applicant at least 18 who owns or represents a U.S.-registered business and meets verification requirements. Its guide lists LLCs, corporations and partnerships for eligible U.S. and international owners; sole proprietorships and nonprofits are listed for U.S.-based owners. International pathways have supported-country and feature restrictions.

Bluevine requests business, tax-ID, identity and ownership information, with documents depending on structure. Sole proprietors can provide an SSN under its application guidance. Additional owners with at least 25% ownership, and relevant nonprofit controllers, require identifying details.

Novo supports eligible sole proprietors and other business structures. Its sole-proprietor guidance requires both an SSN and EIN, with U.S. residency, operations, address and mobile-number requirements in its location guidance.

Application completion, review and approval are different stages. Both can request additional evidence. Confirm approval, limits and enabled payment features before moving payroll or redirecting customer receipts.

FinanceProspector’s Take

Bluevine Standard is the stronger fit when you can consistently meet its interest requirements or need a supported route for direct cash deposits. Interest can add value to retained operating funds, but qualification rules, deposit charges and the payments you use determine the practical benefit.

Novo is worth considering when included bookkeeping, internal Reserves and eligible earlier Stripe payouts are more useful to your business than checking interest or direct cash deposits. Its 0% APY and lack of direct cash deposits are clear tradeoffs. Your balance pattern, funding routes and need for team-access controls should drive the choice.

Before You Apply

  1. Check eligibility. Match legal structure, owner location and required documents to the correct application route.
  2. Map incoming money. Separate cash deposits, qualifying client receipts and eligible automatic Stripe payouts; they solve different needs.
  3. Confirm account access. Check permissions, enabled payment routes and available limits.
  4. Calculate your own activity costs. Include faster payments, cash deposits, software and processors; do not assume interest or earlier access makes all activity free.

FAQs

Does Bluevine Standard Always Pay Interest?

No. The 1.3% APY requires qualifying activity during each defined eligibility period and applies within the balance cap. Missing both routes means 0.00% APY for that month.

Are Novo Reserves Separate Bank Accounts?

No. They are allocations within one checking account. Bluevine sub-accounts have distinct account numbers; neither structure automatically adds deposit-insurance coverage.

Does Novo Reimburse Every ATM Fee?

No. The reimbursement cap is $7 per customer per month. Operator fees beyond that allowance can remain payable.

Can Every Novo Customer Send a Domestic Wire?

No. Its dedicated help guidance describes native outgoing access for selected eligible customers. Confirm the enabled option and quote; the fee schedule lists up to $45.

Is Novo Boost an Interest Payment?

No. Boost provides conditional earlier access to eligible automatic Stripe payouts, with account-specific limits and provisional-credit reversal conditions.

Do Both Providers Include Invoicing?

Yes. Included invoice creation is separate from payment processing, which can have additional fees and eligibility requirements.
